Today the American Federation of Teachers and the American Association of University Professors will launch a joint national campaign, A New Deal for Higher Education, which calls for the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act and massive federal investment in higher education.
AFT President Randi Weingarten and AAUP President Irene Mulvey will lay out their vision, via Zoom, of higher education as a public good and discuss a reimagined federal role for the sector under the Biden-Harris administration.
Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) will join the virtual launch. Pressley will highlight legislative and executive actions to make college accessible to all, regardless of ability to pay; strategies to improve diversity and equity on college campuses; sustainable higher education careers for faculty (especially part-time faculty) and staff; and how to tackle student debt.
A message from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) will be aired prior to a panel discussion with higher education workers, moderated by Suzanne Kahn, managing director of research and policy at the Roosevelt Institute.
